The Miss Face of Soweto contestants were excited when they were shown around the Revlon manufacturing plant in Isando in Gauteng.

The cosmetics company is a sponsors of the inaugural pageant.

Some of the pretty contestants are pencil thin and could very easily be top international models.

But there are also sisters with big bodies, whose knowledge and confidence in answering difficult questions give them a good chance of walking away with a car and R50000 in cash.

I was left with this impression after interacting with the 20 contestants who made it to the finals of the first Miss Face of Soweto at the weekend.

They were chosen from thousands of hopefuls.

Organiser Dennis Madondo emphasises that this is no ordinary beauty pageant because they are looking for a very intelligent girl to represent all the beautiful and bright girls of Soweto.

Madondo says it is important that the perfect girl becomes The Face of Soweto on June 7.

He says the winner will represent the aspirations, ambitions and dreams of all the girls in the sprawling township south of Johannesburg.

The competition also aims to deal with the social ill of teenage pregnancy and wants to focus on the yearly Unplanned Teenage Pregnancy Week that was held from April 21 to 25.

Madondo says: "South Africa is fast becoming part of the global crisis in which the spirit of ubuntu and moral regeneration are totally lost to both our young people and adults.

"The crises we are facing are not limited to the worldwide HIV-Aids killer but also includes issues such as unplanned teenage pregnancy.

"Unplanned pregnancies are another way in which HIV-Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases are being spread.

"The Face of Soweto was born out of the realisation that it is essential to instil the spirit of ubuntu in our youth and to revive moral regeneration to fight the problem."
