Santos will go for broke against SuperSport United in a top of the table Absa Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium tonight at 7.30.

The People's Team need nothing less than maximum points to remain in the closely contested three-horse race for the championship title.

It promises to be a cracker as Matsatsantsa a Pitori are in the same boat: they need a win to enhance their chances of winning the league.

United are second on the table with 47 points from 26 games, with only four points separating them from third-placed Santos.

After dropping two valuable points in their 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs, Santos are also well aware that they are not guaranteed to finish third on the log.

In David Bright, Santos have employed one of the most strategic coaches who has quickly turned the club's fortunes around.

Bright arrived at Santos in January when they were deep in relegation zone after a string of poor results in the first round.

Now he faces a new challenge in trying to hold off teams below them.

As for United, the Randburg-based outfit looked unimpressive in their defeat by Mamelodi Sundowns last week, especially at the back.

Gavin Hunt, their coach, attributed their poor display to the absence of key players Fikru Tefera and Shane Poggenpoel.

Hunt will have a big pool of players to choose from today with the duo back from suspension.

l Moroka Swallows return to Germiston Stadium tonight on a mission to maintain their winning rhythm.

Swallows have a date with the unpredictable Free State Stars at the same venue where they upstaged log leaders Ajax Cape Town, winning the match 2-1 two weeks ago.

"We need to return to the top eight, there is a guarantee of no less than R1 million for clubs finishing in that bracket," said Sipho Xulu, Birds' general manager.

l Wits are expected to intensify their challenge for a top five finish at the expense of AmaZulu at Milpark Stadium tonight at 8.

The encounter should be a tough one as the two sides are desperately out to redeem their dented images after losing their weekend matches.

The Clever Boys went down 1-0 to relegation-threatened Black Leopards in Limpopo, while AmaZulu were defeated 2-0 by Free State Stars.
