A nail-biting Sama awaits music lovers

It's all systems go for the 14th South African Music Awards at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday,

This year's awards feature a flurry of the best nominees that have the judges in a frenzy.

Highly contested categories such as Best Kwaito Album and Song of the Year are nail-biting affairs.

Saturday will see a Cape Town battle between heavyweights Jimmy Dludlu and Freshlyground. Both feature in five categories.

Music fans are waiting with baited breath to see who has the courage to sweep the cupboards.

But we are rooting for Jimmy Dludlu; he has released a splendid and classic album.

History is not likely to repeat itself when it comes to Freshlyground. Their latest album is not as hot as the previous one that saw them walk away with honours.

In the best kwaito album category Alaska is up against Brickz, Howza, Mandoza and T'zozo and Professor.

This one will confuse the best of prophets. But we foresee the Durban boys flying away with this one.

What we don't see is "Mr. Cut to the chase", aka Howza, making things easy for them.

It looks as if Malaika and Ntando are having an intense time in the Best African Pop Album category competing with the Jaziel Brothers and Martin Phike.

Speedy will definitely not be a walk in the park.

In the African traditional gospel category Lundi Tyamara is up against Lusanda Mcinga, Rebecca Malope, Sipho Makhabane and Winnie Mashaba.

Though Lundi is not a threat, Lusanda and Rebecca should be careful, Winnie Mashaba could surprise them.

On Saturday it will be settled who the big boys and girls in the South African music industry are.
