Nelspruit Marathon Club (NMC) athlete Samuel Makamu said the incentives promised to him by his sponsor, Nelspruit Avis car rental agency, will encourage him to do well in this year's Comrades Marathon.

Avis has promised Makamu R10000 if he finishes in the top 10 and another R10000 if he completes the race in less than six hours.

On Friday he received R10000 for finishing in the top five during the Forever Resorts Loskop Marathon 50km.

Makamu said on Friday: "I'm happy for Avis to support me.

"The incentives have encouraged me to work harder and I'm confident I will do well in the Comrades."

He attributes his recent top performances to his coach, Owen McGee.

"At the moment my coach is not putting me under any pressure.

"He said if I run I must not run to win a race but to have a best finishing time, which works wonders for me."

On how he is preparing for the Comrades, Makamu said his training is on track and his coach has placed him on a special diet until the race.
