Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) top brass are mobilising support for the inaugural Sowetan Big Walk in Soweto on Thursday morning.

"We have asked all our clubs to support this event, it is a noble idea by Sowetan newspaper," said James Moloi, CGA's road running commission convenor.

"Walking is one of the fastest growing events, we have young and old community members who participate in various walk events for health reasons.

"There are many people in Gauteng and rest of South Africa who are gradually developing a tremendous amount of interest in walking."

The event, which Sowetan plans to stage yearly, is held in honour of athletics legend Mathews "Loop en Val" Motshwarateu, who was killed in 2003.

The Loop en Val Athletics Club in Mapetla is hosting this event, which is expected attract thousands of people from across Gauteng.

Pango Makhale, Loop en Val Athletics Club's chairman, said: "It's all systems go for the big day on Thursday, we are looking forward to a great family day.

"We have been inundated with enquiries from people as far as KwaThema, Atteridgeville, Sandton, Moreleta Park and Orange Farm who are coming to participate."

The Sowetan Big Walk, which starts near the Mapetla Sports Centre and finishes inside the centre, will feature a 5km fun walk and a 10km challenge.

Powered by Coca-Cola South Africa, the event is part of the community development activities of Sowetan's Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation. Other partners include Jozi FM and Johannesburg Water.
