Cable wire theft rate alarming

Riot Hlatshwayo

Riot Hlatshwayo

The theft of copper wire has increased dramatically in Mpumalanga, with the police claiming that 21 incidents took place in the province in just six days.

Police arrested a man in Dirkiesdorp near Piet Retief after finding copper wire worth R4000 in his bakkie on Friday.

The wire had apparently been stolen from the Kaangra coal mine.

The man is expected to appear in the local magistrate court today, Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said yesterday.

A woman, who was recently arrested for the theft of copper cables, told police that adults were sending young boys to steal cables on their behalf.

The boys did it for small amounts of cash.
