The eagerly anticipated Butityi Konki Schools Rugby League gets under way today at Good Year Recreation Centre, Uitenhage, in Eastern Cape.

Forty schools will compete in the inaugural tournament that will run until October 15.

The development competition was launched last month and is bankrolled by a generous donation of R300000 from businessman Butityi Konki.

Solomon Mahlangu High School and Sisonke High School will cross swords today at 3pm to mark the opening of the tournament.

Noxolo Abraham-Ntantiso, MEC for sports, recreation, arts and culture in Eastern Cape, will give the keynote address at 1pm.

Among the dignitaries expected at the opening ceremony are Mveleli Ncula, South African Rugby Union deputy chief executive, and members of the rugby fraternity in the province.

Former rugby player Konki is also funding the Four Nations Rugby Cup that will take place on Monday at Central rugby ground in Uitenhage.

The one-day competition will be contested by three local rugby clubs - Gardens, Progress and Swallows - and white team Dispatch Oosterlike.

Swallows meet Progress in the first semifinal at 9.30am and Gardens challenge Oosterlike in the second semi at 11.30am. The final is at 3pm.

The winning team will walk away with R5000, gold medals and a trophy while the runners-up collect R2000, silver medals and a trophy.
