Newly elected chairman of the troubled Andrew Mehlape ANC branch in Mankweng has urged former of the organisation to renew their membership and aspirant members to join in the run-up to next year's general elections.

Abel Rakoma was elected chairman of the Limpopo branch, four years after it was declared non-existent because of a lack of membership and leadership problems.

The branch has not been active since 2004.

An elated Rakoma said that he was ready for the challenge of recruiting new members.

"We want to recruit more members with a view to ensuring serious political engagement in the branch," Rakoma said.

He said the new leadership would start by conducting political education.

"We have resolved to promote constitutional compliance and implement resolutions adopted at the 52nd national conference in Polokwane," Rakoma said.

He added that the executive committee would appoint standing committee conveners for its education, health, safety and security, communication, local government and local economic development committees.

Other executive committee members are: Andries Seabi deputy chairman, Silas Mokou secretary, Mokgadi Mathosa deputy secretary and Mapodi Khoabane treasurer.

Rakoma was one of the province's interim leaders with Pitsi Moloto, Dipuo Letsatsi and the late Peter Mokaba in the late 1990s .
