A 25-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was caught in the crossfire during a shooting at a taxi rank in Cato Manor on Wednesday.
Police refuse to release the man's identity or the name of the hospital where he is being treated.
Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge said the shooting was related to the ongoing feud between taxi associations over routes.
"The victim was caught in crossfire when unknown gunmen started shooting at scores of minibus taxis parked in Durban's Cato Manor suburb," Mdunge said.
"The man was hit in the back of his head."
According to Mdunge at least 10 minibus taxis parked in Dunbar Road were hit when unknown men travelling in a 4x4 and a Citi Golf opened fire on the taxi rank.
"For safety reasons we are not releasing the victim's name or that of the hospital," Mdunge said. "We are following strong leads and hope to make arrests soon."
He said the affected taxis belonged to the Cato Manor and Chesterville taxi associations.
Police have been deployed at the taxi rank to monitor the situation.
One commuter said she was now scared of taking a taxi to work or to go anywhere near a taxi rank.
But she had no choice since the taxis were the only fast and easily accessible transport in her area.
"It is very unsafe at our taxi ranks," she said. "Taxi owners should sort out their problems away from the ranks where there are innocent commuters."
Police later found both the 4X4 and the Citi Golf abandoned not far from the taxi rank.
No arrests have been made.
In separate incidents in northern KwaZulu-Natal robbers made off with cash in two ATM bombings.
At Nongoma robbers blew up a Standard Bank ATM, while in Newcastle a guard was tied up in a pub before the robbers blasted its machine. Cash was taken in both incidents.
