Ifp councillors waiting in limbo

The six IFP councillors in the Okhahlamba municipality, in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal midlands, who are to appear before the party's disciplinary committee (DC) next Friday, accuse party leaders of dragging their feet.

The six were threatened with disciplinary action after they took part in a meeting about three weeks ago that ousted three of their colleagues - mayor, municipal manager and speaker.

The newly elected municipal speaker is Clement Mabizela. He presided over a meeting that ousted "former" mayor, Vikizitha Mlotshwa, and colleagues.

Mabizela told Sowetan yesterday that the IFP was taking long to conclude the hearing because "they realise that we were correct to oust Mlotshwa".

The new mayor is Bhekani Hlongwa, deputy mayor is Joyce Shabalala and Sizwe Miya is acting municipal manager. They are all IFP members.

"We were told that there would be a hearing. It should have been concluded by now, but we have now been told that it has been postponed for next Friday.

"We still stand by what we did," said Mabizela.

Mlotshwa is taking the council to court. He says he is still the rightful mayor and has denied any wrongdoing.

IFP DC chairman, Johnson Mathenjwa, declined to comment.
