Police are searching for two suspects in connection with the bombing of an ATM in Modimolle, in North West, this week.

The two were part of a group of five men who allegedly blew up an ATM in Phahameng township on Wednesday morning.

Three other suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Modimolle police spokesman Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba said they received a tip-off about a blast in Phahameng at about 2am.

He said while on patrol the police spotted a suspiciouslooking vehicle with occupants on the R101.

When they followed the car the occupants started shooting at the police, who returned fire.

The car, a Ford Ranger bakkie with Gauteng registration numbers, was later found abandoned about 16km from the township on the Mookgophong route, Ledwaba said.

He said an undisclosed amount of cash and other items, including explosives, were found in the car.

"A massive search comprising members of the police dog unit, crime prevention unit, operational response unit, air wing, organised crime unit and detectives was conducted," he said.

The three, aged between 26 and 32, were arrested at midday on Wednesday.

A firearm was also confiscated from them.

Ledwaba urged members of the public to come forward with information that might lead to the arrest of the other suspects.
