A young Limpopo policeman was rewarded yesterday for his tough stance against crime and corruption.

The Giyani-based police constable this week arrested two people who were trying to bribe him on two separate occasions.

In the first incident Constable Ntwanano Agreement Maringa, 23, of MW Makhubela police station in Giyani, on Tuesday in Giyani allegedly noticed an Ethiopian man driving a car while speaking on a cellphone.

He stopped the 26-year-old man with the intention of charging him for using a phone while driving.

The man allegedly took out a R50 note and tried to bribe Maringa.

He was arrested and charged with bribery and also with the original charge of driving while speaking on the phone.

The second incident happened when Maringa allegedly caught a 30-year-old man from NwaPhahane village near Giyani driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

The man had no driver's license either and allegedly tried to bribe Maringa with R200.

The man was arrested and charged with bribery as well as the original charges of driving an unroadworthy vehicle and driving without a driver's licence.

For his honesty and bravery, Maringa was rewarded with a certificate of appreciation and a cheque, the amount of which was not disclosed.

Police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe yesterday commended Maringa for being a law-abiding citizen.

"The manner in which Maringa conducted himself in the two incidents gives us hope that cops are on the right track," Ngoepe said.
