The problem of dirty water in the Mpumalanga villages of Coromandel and Sabie has finally been solved by the municipality.
The Ehlanzeni district municipality yesterday handed over the purification plant and water treatment works worth about R2,9million.
Municipal executive mayor, Constance Mkhonto handed over the Coromandel purification plant and Sabie waste water treatment works to the residents of both villages.
The purification system has since 2003 been unable to deliver clean water to the ever-growing community of Coromandel.
The increase in the population created an overload of the water purification system with the result that the water quality was poor.
Municipal spokesman Abie Ndlela said the matter was brought to the attention of the municipality, prompting Mkhonto to source funding from savings within the municipality to solve the problem.
"The problem of dirty water has been solved and as government we remain committed to providing the people with clean and safe water," Mkhonto said.
He explained the meaning of "waste water" to the public and said this was done to care for the environment and safeguard people's health.
"Water is a great playground for us all," Mkhonto said. "The scenic and recreational value of our waters is why many people choose to live where they do."
The mayor said more than 100 jobs had been created during the construction of the projects.
These jobs, she said, were created through the local economic empowerment concept, a national government programme that creates temporary work opportunities and training for the unemployed.
