Sowetan Big Walk open to everyone

Victor Mecoamere

Anyone from anywhere in South Africa can enter the inaugural Sowetan Big Walk which will take place in Mapetla, Soweto, on May 1.

The event encourages walking as a family and community health and fitness tool, and is contributing to the promotion of walking as a growing, competitive sport.

This brainchild of Madimo Promotions is powered by Coca-Cola in association with the Loop en Val Athletics Club, Jozi FM and Joburg Water. It is part of the community development activities of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

It also honours the memory of the legendary Matthews "Loop en Val" Motshwarateu, and is located on the yearly race calendar of Central Gauteng Athletics.

The hosts - Loop en Val Athletics Club - are part of Athletics South Africa.

Starting near and finishing inside Mapetla Sports Centre, the Sowetan Big Walk features a 5km fun walk and a 10km walking challenge. The entry fee for the 5km fun walk is R10. For the 10km challenge, the fee is R20.

Those taking part in the 10km walking challenge, who are not affiliated to any club, should expect to pay an additional R15 for a temporary licence.

Pensioners enter at no cost. Most of the registration process will take place at Mapetla Sports Centre on the race day from 7am. Registration forms are obtainable at the offices of Sowetan at 61 Commando Road, Industria West, on weekdays from 10am to 4pm. More than R10000 in prize money is up for grabs. Finishers will earn themselves a gold medal, marking the 20th anniversary of Sowetan's nation building work.

lOn Monday, April 7, a photograph of top athlete Simon Mpholo was used in place of that of the late Motshwarateu. We regret the error and apologise to Mpholo for any inconvenience that might have been caused.
