Thousands of civil servants are to be prosecuted for fraudulently acquiring RDP houses.

The housing department said yesterday that more than 31000 civil servants were currently under investigation for housing fraud.

Department spokesman Xolani Xundu said: "At present 3800 civil servants are facing prosecution as investigations into their cases have been finalised."

The prosecutions follow President Thabo Mbeki's proclamation last April authorising the special investigations unit to begin investigations after the auditor-general's 2006 report indicated fraud and corruption in the housing subsidy system.

Civil servants do not qualify for RDP houses since they earn more than R3500 a month and already have housing subsidies.
