Gambling equipment worth R23million was seized during a week-long operation conducted by several law enforcement agencies in North West, the police said yesterday.

The operation was carried out by members of the Organised Crime Unit, Crime Intelligence Gathering Unit and Asset Forfeiture Unit.

They were assisted by KPMG Financial Services and Liquidators.

The intelligence-driven operation led to the closure of four illegal gambling premises in Rustenburg about a week ago.

North West police spokesman Superintendent Louis Jacobs said: "In all 412 slot machines valued at approximately R10000 each, tokens with a face value of more than R150000 and nine coin counting machines, two money scanners and various other pieces of gambling equipment were also seized.

"Small quantities of liquor were also confiscated at some of the premises."

Jacobs said the Asset Forfeiture Unit, in conjunction with KPMG who is acting as curator, also seized seven buildings and articles such as televisions, computers, furniture and electrical appliances.
