I read the report about the price of food and how your reporters bought groceries to the value of R802,76 (Sowetan, April 18.)

This figure is truly frightening since it leaves very little for transport, medicine and rent, especially if you are elderly or on a disability grant.

There are ways to cut corners, such as buying smaller amounts of the products you need, but this really does not provide a long-term solution to the problem.

My solutions also require time, something there is very little of as winter approaches.

I would encourage people to set aside some of those speckled red beans potatoes to grow in a small patch in the garden.

I know it isn't much but it is a start and something that should be done right away.
