Old Mutual South Africa yesterday announced a donation of R500000 towards the development of a new cricket academy named after Makhaya Ntini.
An additional amount of R70000 raised by the company's employees was also handed over at a ceremony held in Sandton yesterday.
The Makhaya Ntini Academy will be built in Mdantsane in Eastern Cape where the Proteas fast bowler started his career.
It will cost R3 million, the balance of which is expected to be raised within 13 months. The insurance company will lead the fundraising campaign.
Ntini and Themba Lupuwana, Border Cricket chief executive, will be involved in coaching aspirant cricketers.
An excited Ntini said: "It is a dream come true for the establishment of the academy. I want to impart my knowledge I have gained for the past 11 years to the young ones."
Paul Hanratty, Old Mutual's managing director, told Sowetan: "We owe it to our country's youth to provide opportunities they can seize. Sport is an important shaper of young people.
"I encourage other people or companies to get behind the academy."
