Former Umkhonto we Sizwe commander and founding member of the integrated SA National Defence Force, Andrew Masondo, has died.

He died on Sunday aged 71.

The ANC yesterday described Masondo as a "distinguished veteran of the South African liberation struggle". He had been hospitalised after being diagnosed with kidney failure.

Masondo was a top MK soldier. He trained in several Eastern bloc countries and West Africa.

Masondo also took part in military battles including the Wankie battle in the former Rhodesia in 1967 alongside the late Chris Hani and Zimbabwean Zipra guerillas fighting against the government of Ian Smith .

The ANC said Masondo was a "dedi- cated freedom fighter" who played a central role in the formation of the SANDF as an integrated force serving a democratic South Africa.
