For more than a decade the Southern Cape holiday town of Hermanus has remained a sort of secret of and favourite destination for hordes of holiday-makers who make a quiet seasonal beeline to the resort.

It's main attraction is its scenic beauty, pristine beaches and seasonal whale watching - a sure favourite among many local and international tourists.

The town, located about an hour away from Cape Town, boasts modern infrastructure, up-market shops, top restaurants and sightseeing and adventure spots.

Small wonder the town is home to famous boutique wine estates such as Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson and Benguela Cove, all of which nestle in a coastal belt known as the Walker Bay region.

Other prominent landmarks include the world famous Arabella country estate, which is a popular holiday and golf destination for the well-heeled.

Benguela Cove prides itself on being the only wine estate situated on the lagoon.

Premium wines from the estate find their way to the local and international markets once they have been taken out of the able hands of leading viticulturist Schalk du Toit, whose Sauvignon Blanc carries the torch for the estate.

The estate is expanding to new horizons as a lifestyle property development encompassing 124 holiday homes currently on sale, private nature reserve, olives and lavender farm, hiking and leisure walkways, hotel and spa, restaurant and fishing spot.

Once completed, the estate's residents will enjoy natural surrounds in an animal kingdom cohabited by game such as grey rhebok, duiker, grysbok and other non-predatory species.

The estate is situated on the banks of the Botrivier Lagoon and boasts majestic sights of the Palmiet Mountains a short distant away.

Benguela Cove is taking shape very well, with a number of homes complete or nearing completion. The estate looks stunning, with the lavender in full bloom.

Anthony Gerard, spokesman for NPV developers, says the estate development is shaping well.

"The Sauvignon Blanc grapes have just been harvested with the Cabernet and Merlot grapes being harvested shortly," he says. "Schalk du Toit, our winemaker, is optimistic about the quality of this year's wines - hopefully there will be many more Veritas awards for the Benguela Cove."

A distinguishable feature of Hermanus is not only its panoramic views and serenity, but its Mediterranean scenic beauty.
