Former provincial cricketer Gareth Tindall has been appointed as the new commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.

Tindall, who is also a businessman, took over from Johan Immelman who vacated his post in December and has left for the United States to join his family.

The 47-year old Tindall, who has a law degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, will start on his new job on May 1.

Tindall plays off a three-handi- cap and is a member of both The River Club and Leopard Creek. HE said his passion for golf and South Africa inspired him to accept this new challenge.

"I believe that golf is a perfect vehicle to market South Africa, and my passion for both of these meant that this was a perfect fit for me.

"This was an opportunity for me to do something I'm really challenged by and interested in," he said.

"I've been in the corporate world for many years now and have built up a strong network. I understand people and will be drawing on these strengths in my new position.

"South African professional golf is very strong at the moment, and the Sunshine Tour has always played a key role in producing our next generation of international stars. I know what the expectations are and I'm looking forward to building on this success."

Johann Rupert, chairman of the Southern Africa PGA Tour, said Tindall's impressive business acumen and his intimate knowledge of successful relationships was a major factor in his appointment.

"Gareth is a highly respected businessman and I have no doubt that he will be a tremendous asset to the Sunshine Tour and golf in this country," he said.
