The Greater Nelspruit Rape Intervention Programme (Grip) last week released shocking and disgraceful child rape statistics.

According to the statistics, Mpumalanga's Lowveld has 206 rape survivors between the ages of one and 18.

These are cases that were reported in the area between January and December last year.

Masoyi near Hazyview has the most rape survivors, with 34 cases of children between the ages of 11 and 15, while Nelspruit has 22 and Matsulu outside Nelspruit 13.

These statistics are based only on reported cases.

"With these horrific statistics, we now have a proposed bill that will allow children as young as 12 years of age to have access to contraceptives," said Anthony Benadie, leader of the DA.

"Our children need to be taught about the horrors of rape and what to do if they find themselves in this unfortunate situation.

"The only way we can turn around the statistics on child rape is through education.

"We must eliminate rape, particularly against children."
