The ANC in Mpumalanga has suspended the Bushbuckridge mayor who was released last week on R10000 bail in a murder case.

Sowetan learnt yesterday that Milton Morema was served with a suspension letter on Friday pending court finalisation of the murder charges.

Morema, with his cousin Erasmus Makhubela and Casteel municipal regional mayor Lakios Mosoma, was arrested for allegedly being involved in the murder of two so-called political opponents.

They are alleged to have killed Motion Mashile and Jeffrey Mathe- bula in 2003.

Mashile was competing with Mosoma for a principal's post at the Green Valley Primary School at the time. The other accused, Mathebula, 24, of Green Valley, was the alleged hitman hired by Morema and his associates to kill Mosoma for R17000

But ANC provincial ANC spokesman Paul Mbenyane said he was unaware of Morema's suspension and that the ANC provincial executive committee was still discussing his future.

"We believe that until proven otherwise, Morema is innocent," Mbenyane said

"Should he be found guilty the ANC will take decisive action against him."
