Holland event to hone SSA

Mcelwa Nchabeleng

Softball South Africa (SSA) begins with preparations for next year's World Men's Championships by taking part in an international tournament to be hosted by Holland next month.

SSA's team manager, Polelo "Mr Magic" Masola, said they were going on a two-pronged mission.

"Firstly, we agreed to the Dutch invitation because we want to prepare our squad for the World Championships in Canada next year," said Masola.

"Secondly, we will try to convince some of the countries that will be competing in Holland to come to South Africa for a tournament that we intend to host later this year."

SSA selected a 16-member squad at their national championships in Cape Town in March and Masola believes the players are capable of causing an upset in Amsterdam from May 9 to 13.

The squad is coached by multiple championship-winning coach Tommy "TK" Kgomo. The squad:

Pitchers: Richard Classen, Vasna Molaba, Tshepo Mokoena, Tidima Kekana.

Catchers: Jonathan Viljoen, John Potts.

Infielders: David Lee Alexander, Gareth Scott, Tarig Moosa, Thapelo Seshoka.

Outfielders: Greg Barret, Gerahard van Niekerk, Gert van der Walt.

12. Gerhard van Niekerk.

13. Gert van der Walt, Gavin Barret.

Utility: Renier Viljoen, Tyron Young and Duncan Small.
