The week-long strike by construction workers at the Mbombela Stadium has come to an end.
The workers returned to work yesterday after downing tools in protest over bonuses and wages.
Work came to a grinding halt last week for the third time in a year.
"Workers have agreed to a R2,11 an hour increase as per construction sector rates, and this, it was agreed. would be backdated to February 1," said Mpumalanga's 2010 coordinator, Differ Mogale.
This latest strike started when construction workers affiliated to NUM demanded to be told why Mpumalanga 2010 construction workers were classified under building construction, while their counterparts in other provinces were classified under civil engineering.
The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration facilitated negotiations between NUM and the Mbombela municipality. The issue was amicably resolved.
The stadium has been allocated first- and second-round World Cup matches.
It will have a 40000 seating capacity on completion. The stadium, near Mataffin in Nelspruit, will be completed early next year.
In November workers were engaged in another protest action while talks over a wage dispute between the stadium contractors and organised labour were in progress.
But Mbombela Stadium management and NUM representatives resolved some of the thorny issues amicably and the strike was called off.
