'We plan to sort out Reitz soon'

The council of the University of the Free State yesterday started going through recommendations on how to transform the now infamous Reitz men's residence on its campus.

The council has given the parents of current Reitz residents, former residents, staff members at the house and students until Monday to make their submissions.

This comes after the emergence of a racist video showing four students from Reitz mentally abusing five workers by offering them food that had apparently been urinated on.

The video was made to express their hostile attitude towards racial integration at the institution's residences.

The council had written letters to all stakeholders to make suggestions about the future of the residence.

Vice-rector of academic affairs Ezekiel Moraka said they would only have a way forward after they had gone through all the submissions.

The council has also launched an investigation - to be conducted by an outside agency - into the underlying problems that led to the racist incident.

Moraka said the council was also looking into introducing a new compulsory module on diversity for all the university's first-year students.
