A clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs' development teams should generate the excitement and atmosphere that usually prevails when their Premiership sides meet.
The two meet in four divisions in the newly formed Safa Soweto Development League at Pimville-Klipspruit Development Centre on Sunday, starting at 11am.
They will clash in the Under-13s, Under-15s, Under-17s and Under-20 age groups.
The league, which comprises 22 teams, has attracted eight professional sides in Pirates, Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Platinum Stars, Bidvest Wits, SuperSport United, Jomo Cosmos and Moroka Swallows.
Other teams in the league are the Transnet School of Excellence, Jazzy Queen Legodi's Africa Sport Academy, Tuks, Inter Africa Academy and some amateur teams from Soweto.
Phil "Chippa'' Mogodi, Safa Soweto president, was over the moon that the league will at last get off the ground.
Said Mogodi: "The aim of the development league is to improve the standard of the game.
"We urge the soccer loving people and community of Soweto to come in their droves to watch the juniors in action."
His sentiments were echoed by former Chiefs defender Johannes "Ryder'' Mofokeng, who is one of Amakhosi development coaches.
Said Mofokeng: "It is very important to take the games to the community and create a lot of excitement. I have no doubt that our game against Pirates is going to produce fireworks."
