Title chasers Ajax Cape Town suffered yet another setback when they dropped two valuable points after playing to a 1-1 draw with Free State Stars at Welkom Stadium yesterday.

In fact, the Urban Warriors must thank their gods for grabbing a point in this Absa Premiership match after the hosts missed dozens of golden scoring opportunities.

Jimmy Khauleza opened the scoring for Ea Lla Koto in the third minute when he beat Ajax goalkeeper Hans Vonk with a low shot after a pass from Collins Chabalala.

Ajax fought back gallantly in the second half and were rewarded in the 69th minute when Mfundu Shumana levelled matters.

He beat Stars' goalie Kennedy Mweene hands down with a fierce shot following a brilliant solo run.

The result was not the best for either side given that they were looking to redeem themselves after recent defeats.

Stars lost 1-0 to Bidvest Wits while the Urban Warriors were defeated 2-1 by Moroka Swallows.

In the first half, Stars created a few scoring chances but lacked composure in front of goal.

Stars' Thulasizwe Mbuyane almost doubled the lead on the half-hour mark but narrowly missed the target with a header following a pass from Khauleza.

A minute later, Mweene made a breathtaking save from Shumana. Khauleza was unlucky not to get a brace in the 43rd minute when his shot was parried by Vonk.

Ajax made a change immediately after the recess when they brought on Russel Mwafulirwa for Franklin Cale in the 46th minute to add more fire-power.

The Capetonians started to pile the pressure on Stars in search of goals, with creative moves.

In the 60th minute, Shumana fluffed a golden scoring opportunity when his shot was cleared off the line by defender Siyabonga Mdluli.

In an effort to secure the results, Stars introduced Matome Madimabe and Tshepo Mashego for Motseothata November and Chabalala in the 66th minute and 68th minutes, respectively.

But their introduction did not have the desired effect.
