Affront to democracy

We feel vindicated by the fact that the Human Rights Commission has found conditions at the Pieter Wessels Old Age Home in Nigel not entirely in tune with our integrated society.

We feel vindicated by the fact that the Human Rights Commission has found conditions at the Pieter Wessels Old Age Home in Nigel not entirely in tune with our integrated society.

What has tempered our euphoria over the outcome of the HRC probe, though, is that the home's management remains intransigent. It is allowing a situation to persist in which black and white people have separate and unequal amenities.

For some reason the home's management seems bent on arrogantly continuing with their racist attitude towards elderly black people. This is sad, to say the least.

A month after Sowetan exposed the home's discriminatory practice of neglecting black pensioners and giving royal treatment to whites, management has still not heeded the government's call to stop this segregation.

After conducting its own investigation, which proved the existence of racism at the institution, the HRC this week threatened to take management to the equity court if they did not change.

The HRC's stance is welcomed but we're alarmed at management's arrogant disregard of official warnings.

The Department of Social Development should withdraw subsidies to the home to force management to comply rather than merely lodge a complaint with the HRC.

They must be given an ultimatum to toe the line or shut down.
