Rapule Thebyane, coach of the Gauteng handball team, who will be coaching the senior provincial side for the first time, is determined to do well in the provincial championships in July.
Thebyane, who was appointed four weeks ago by the Gauteng Handball Association (GHA), was awarded a B-licence coaching certificate in Leipzig, Germany in 2001.
He said he was confident of meeting the challenges ahead because he was not new to the game.
Before graduating to the senior level, Thebyane was coaching the junior squads in the province and he believes he can handle the senior side.
"I'm delighted to be appointed coach of the province and I hope to do well and produce results. I've never coached at that level before but with the association giving me the backing, I hope to do well," he said.
Thebyane said he had selected 21 players during the Gauteng Championships last weekend and would still watch other games to select eight more players to increase the number to 28.
"I'm going to arrange some friendlies for the squad and later we'll divide the squad into two to play against each other. Thereafter I will select a strong team of 16 players for the coming championships.
"I want to give every player a chance because we're still going to chop and change until we get the squad that can represent our province," he said.
Thebyane added that with players such as Kgomotso Motetsoe, who played in Sweden three years ago, Itumeleng Rapelego and Themba Dube, he believes they will do well at the championships.
The provisional squad: Themba Dube, Tumi Modise, George Modise, Itumeleng Rapelego (Kagiso); Sifiso Mokoena, Modise Modise, Tshepo Dikgete, Kgomotso Motetsoe (Soweto); Michael Maqungu, Bongani Tshabalala, Linda Ngobese (Falcons); Simon Hartiger, Bernerd Klinpworth, Arne Leeflang (German School Pretoria); Steven Sphepheri, Stephan Hoffmann, Sven Waurich, Michael Ferger (German School in Johannesburg); Tshepo Tshimeloane (Daveyton) and Shadrack Nkomo (Munsieville).
