Captain Khephu Ndlovu said the Umlazi T Section woman took the tablets on Sunday with the "intention to kill" the baby.
"The woman went to a doctor, got some tablets and then took them," Ndlovu said. "This resulted in the death of the baby."
He said it was unclear whether the doctor was aware of the woman's motives for wanting the tablets.
