In a dramatic turn of events the girl with murdered Swazi activist and doctor, Gabriel Mkhumane, at the time of his death has been identified as a suspect in his killing.
Sowetan has learnt that the 18-year-old girl, who apparently has links with the Swazi royal family, was taken in for questioning a day after his murder.
Both were sitting in a car in KaNyamazane near Nelspruit in Mpumalanga earlier this month when they were attacked.
Police sources said the girl alleged that she was raped before Mkhumane, 48, was killed. But it has since transpired that it took her more than 24 hours to report the alleged rape incident and that she had been using Mkhumane's cellphone long after he was shot dead.
But, provincial police spokesman Sibongile Nkosi said no one had been arrested and requested anyone with information to come forward to help the investigation.
Mkhumane, deputy president of Swaziland's banned People's United Democratic Movement (Pudemo), was in exile in South Africa.
He had been living in exile for 24 years, since 1984 in Mozambique. He left for Cuba and came to South Africa in 2000 to be nearer his home country, Swaziland.
At the time of his death he was working as a medical doctor at Themba Hospital in KaBokweni.
"Those responsible for this callous act should be brought to book and face justice," said Pudemo spokesman Lucky Lukhele.
"They should know that they terminated only his life, but not his revolutionary spirit which will usher many Gabriels to pick up his courageous spear and advance to people's victory over tyranny and barbarism," he said.
He urged the South African government to investigate Mkhumane's death and leave no stone unturned in bringing to book his murderers.
