One person was arrested and another seriously injured at a weekend student bash at Durban's Mangosuthu University of Technology, police said yesterday.

One person was arrested and another seriously injured at a weekend student bash at Durban's Mangosuthu University of Technology, police said yesterday.

Captain Khephu Ndlovu said it was alleged that "pandemonium broke loose" during the bash and that campus security guards fired rubber bullets at the students.

"One person was severely injured and taken to hospital," he said.

A case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened.

Police said a second student was also injured but did not want to open a case.

Another student was arrested at the same beano for allegedly stabbing a fellow student.

The victim was stabbed in the chest but survived.

Ndlovu said the suspect would appear in court shortly.

University spokesman Sanele Zondi said the stabbing was unrelated to the event.

"This was a recognised event," he said.

"Ukhozi FM had been doing a tour of higher education institutions and broadcasting from their premises.

"Afterwards we had some entertainment with various artists performing," Zondi said.

"The student was stabbed outside the university during a scuffle and had nothing to do with the event."

He denied that security guards had fired at students.

"We don't know where the police got this information from.

"The event went smoothly except that someone outside the university fired shots and a student on the premises was struck in the foot." - Sapa
