Police believe they have smashed a robbery syndicate operating in Pietermaritzburg after a storeroom stacked with R100000 worth of goods was found.

Five men have been arrested.

The burglary project team made the discovery after intense investigations.

The investigations followed a recent incident in which a young woman was stabbed several times by thieves who fled with her TV, DVD and clothing.

Zanele Sibisi, 26, was asleep in her room in an outbuilding when she was awoken by four unknown men in her room. They wrapped her in a blanket and tied her up with a rope.

Sibisi managed to free herself but was immediately caught by the men who pinned her to her bed and stabbed her in the chest and face.

On Friday police found a storeroom with stolen goods ranging from televisions, DVDs and air conditioners to other stolen goods.

During the arrests police recovered Sibisi's DVD, TV and clothes.

They also found goods including computers, electrical appliances and hi-fi sets.

The five suspects appeared in the Pietermaritzburg magistrates' court yesterday.

They are Sheldon James, 28, Remember Ngubane, 19, Bongani Ngubane, 22, Khulekani Cele, 27 and Joe Phakathi, 32.

Another three suspects were also arrested and have been charged with receiving property suspected to be stolen.

The three suspects are identified as Mazibo Kangeta, 27, Lungile Mthembu, 32 and Siyabonga Maphanga, 29.

Police spokesman Joey Jeevan said the five suspects have also been linked to other cases in the city's CBD.
