Parents at an Eikenhof school are refusing to move their children to schools in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, because they believe it would have an adverse effect on them.

About 30 angry parents gathered at the Elethu-Themba Public School in Eikenhof to voice their displeasure at the school's decision to move the pupils.

They complained about the suddenness of change after their children were given letters transferring them to Greenfield Secondary School and Sinenjongo Primary School in Thokoza on opening day yesterday.

"I don't want my children to go to that school because there is a lot of bad influence from the township," said Joyce Kgaphola, one of the parents. "My children are fine here because the place is surrounded by farms."

There are about 100 grades one to 10 pupils who live in Kliprivier, which is close to the schools in Eikenhof.

They are collected by two buses at Kliprivier station, 20km from their school in Eikenhof. The buses are paid for by the Gauteng department of education. Greenfield is 15km from the station.

Elethu-Themba principal VK Chuma refused to comment and referred Sowetan to the department.

There was a brief meeting between Chuma and parents but no agreement was reached.

Chaos erupted when Chuma ordered pupils whose parents were not present to get on the bus and head for home.

The parents went to the bus and called the pupils back to the school.

"It is almost mid-year," said Isaac Matsose, another parent. "How do they expect our children to adapt to the new school?

Matsose said parents were prepared to pay R50 a month if money was the reason for their children being taken to Greenfield.

Gauteng education spokesman Tebogo Tlholoe said he could not comment because the inspector in the affected area could not be reached.
