When 12-year-old Nompumelelo Ngwenya went to the Johannesburg Hospital for her monthly medical check-up, she had no inkling that she would spend a day with one of South Africa's most prominent sportsmen.

Nompumelelo was one of the children at the hospital's paediatric ward who were treated to a surprise early birthday party by soccer legend Lucas Radebe on Friday.

"I especially enjoyed the magic show with the Wacky Wizard," Nompumelelo said, her face glittering with gold paint.

Nompumelelo's cousin, Cynthia, who had accompanied her to the hospital, said it was the most pleasant check-up they had ever been to.

Radebe, who turned 39 on Saturday, was duped into coming to the hospital by a leading toothpaste manufacturer, for whom he is brand ambassador.

The children gave Radebe handmade presents.
