Local athletics authorities have endorsed the inaugural Sowetan Big Walk which takes place in Mapetla, Soweto, on May 1.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) president Snowy Matthews addressed the media and guests at the launch of this innovative nation- building project at the Sowetan offices in Industria at the weekend.

"The CGA is proud to have initiated the relationship with the project's originators, Madimo Promotions," she said.

"About a year ago, Madimo approached the CGA with the idea of a big walk.

"We then linked them up with a Soweto-based athletics club, named after track and road running legend, Matthews "Loop en Val" Motshwarateu."

Matthews said Athletic South Africa-affiliated CGA was happy that the Sowetan Big Walk, which is powered by Coca Cola South Africa in association with the Loop en Val Athletic Club, has been made a part of the community development activities of Sowetan's Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

"We at the CGA are passionate and committed to growing the awareness and importance of living a healthy lifestyle through sports in the communities, but walking is also an Olympic event, so it is therefore a competitive sport."

Sowetan and Sunday World publisher Bongani Keswa, said: "Through the Sowetan Big Walk we are encouraging young and old people, particularly families, to walk to stay healthy and fit, and to help promote walking as a competitive sport."

Pango Makhale of Loop en Val Athletic Club said: "As hosts, we want to assure the sponsors and fellow organisers that we will try our utmost, together with all the other Soweto-based athletics clubs, to make this event a resounding success."

Moeneeb Josephs and Ashraf Hendricks of Premier Soccer League club Wits University attended the launch.

Wits players as well as the entire squad of Orlando Pirates, are to take part in the Sowetan Big Walk.
