ANC Eastern Cape stalwart and former Robben Island prisoner Alfred Metele has died.

Metele, a former member of the Eastern Cape legislature, was earlier injured when his vehicle left the road and hit a pole. He was also a diabetic for a long time.

His son Vuyo Metele said his father was injured in a car accident on March 23. He was in the East London Private Hospital until he died on April 9.

He was a former field worker of the Border Council of Churches and an activist of the United Democratic Front in the Border region.

When the ANC was unbanned in 1990 Metele was among the regional core leadership of the movement and was instrumental in organising the formation of new ANC branches in the East London area.

Nontshukumo Sobandla, a family friend, said Metele's memorial service would be held at the Mdantsane Indoor Sport Centre on Wednesday at 4pm. He will be buried at Mooiplaas, outside East London, on Saturday. - Eric Naki
