Johannesburg police arrested more than 400 people for various offences in the city centre in an operation that started on Friday.

Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla of the Hillbrow police said the intensified crime-fighting operation was meant to make the central business district a safe environment for business, residents and tourists.

The three-day operation targeted notorious street corners in areas such as Hillbrow, Braamfontein, Berea and Joubert Park.

"We confiscated heroine, cocaine and other drugs packaged for the street market from some of the suspects," he said.

Some people were arrested for serious crimes such as armed robbery, common robbery, theft, hijacking and domestic violence.

Others were arrested for crimes such as drunk driving, reckless and negligent driving and loitering.

Mavundla said all the people arrested would appear in the Johannesburg magistrate's court today.
