A horny couple allegedly smothered a five-year-old baby girl because she had cried continuously while they were having sex.
The body of the child was then kept hidden in the house while her mother went to the police to report her stolen.
The couple have now been arrested by Witbank police and charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice.
The 40-year-old widow, an alleged drunk, and her 48-year-old jailbird lover were arrested on Wednesday at Clarinent Park after the woman had reported her daughter stolen.
She allegedly blamed several neighbours, including one identified only as Thembi. But Thembi told the police that the child was at home with the woman and her lover when she left them.
The child's biological father, a widower who lives near the woman's house, is always not home during the day.
The detained lover was paroled about two weeks ago after serving 12 of a 15-year jail term.
Captain Eddie Hall of the Witbank police confirmed that the mother and her lover were having sex when they allegedly placed the crying child under a heap of dirty laundry in the bedroom.
Hall also confirmed that they interviewed the lover after receiving information that the couple were in the house with the child when the neighbour left them at about noon. The lover allegedly told police during questioning on Tuesday that he knew nothing.
Police became suspicious and returned to the house the next day and found the child's biological father, who opened the house for them to search.
"They then found the child's body under a heap of laundry. They then arrested the lover and the mother in connection with the baby's death."
Police said the cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.
The couple were to appear in court yesterday.
A neighbour whose house was among those searched by police prior to the horror discovery told Sowetan that "at about 11am on Tuesday I heard the baby screaming in the house and I spotted the mother, her boyfriend and their female friend entering the house.
"I asked her why the child was crying and she said she did not know because she had just breast-fed her and given her food.
"Thembi left the couple in the house together with the woman's other two daughters, aged four and eight." The elder daughter told Sowetan that the boyfriend was waiting in the bedroom "when my mother took the child and ordered me to leave the house".
Meanwhile, executive members of the local policing forum told Sowetan that it was a known fact that the woman was a drunk and neglected her children.
"On Christmas Day, the child was found crying in the street in soiled clothes. She was hungry and very dirty. A neighbour bathed and fed her before taking her to her father's sister.
"Residents, together with the child's parents, signed an agreement allowing the child to remain in the care of her aunt. But on the same day, the very drunk parents went to demand their child back."
