Newspaper Association of South Africa president and owner of M&G Media Trevor Ncube has made an impassioned plea for the protection of media freedom.
Ncube was speaking at the Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards ceremony held in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
He urged journalists to be vigilant and to jealously guard media freedom.
"You have no idea how blessed and fortunate you are," Ncube said.
"The freedom you enjoy was not given but fought for. Sacrifices were made and lives lost.
"Never take it for granted."
