The executive mayor of Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, Milton Morema, has been arrested in connection with the murder of two people.

However police last night were reluctant to release details pertaining to the alleged murders but confirmed that Morema's arrest was in connection with a double murder.

"I can confirm that the executive mayor has been arrested on suspicion of being involved in a double murder," spokesman for the Mpumalanga police's organised unit Leonard Hlathi said.

"Details cannot be released because doing so might interfere with our investigations at the moment."

The reasons for Morema's arrest were not clear but sources close to the provincial police said he is likely to be charged with two counts of murder.

It is believed that police will exhume the two bodies whose deaths Morema is apparently implicated in.

Details are still sketchy but Hlathi confirmed that Morema was in custody.

He will make a court appearance and it is speculated that he might do so on Monday.
