With innovative education through sport, Shona Khona, is continuing to fulfil the dreams of soccer-mad youngsters through highly-interactive coaching and talent-spotting camps.
Shona Khona, which was initiated by Reckitt Benckiser and Metro Cash & Carry, is due to conduct soccer coaching clinics for up to 400 lucky winners of a Shona Khona draw across the country on May 17 and 18.
Shona Khona's other key partners are Sowetan, Mamelodi Sundowns, England-based Manchester United's sponsors AIG, and sports management agency ForwardZone.
Shona Khona recruits enter the competition by following instructions found on Reckitt Benckiser products including Harpic, Mortien Target, Vanish, Cobra,Disprin, Nugget, Sunbeam, Dettol, Airwick and Easy Off Bang from Metcash and Trade Centre stores.
Entries are sent via SMSes. Thereafter, a draw is conducted, and up to 400 aspiring soccer stars are selected for the clinics.
Over the past two years, two sets of 12 starry-eyed future soccer players impressed at the clinics and qualified to attend advanced soccer coaching and mentoring exercises at the Sao Paulo Football Club's thriving academy in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
"We are looking forward to visi- ting all the different provinces for the trials, and the selected youngsters will be coming through to showcase their talents," Shona Khona technical coordinator Mandla Mazibuko said this week.
Shona Khona project coordinator Stan Whiting said: "We are looking for the same type of raw talent that we've seen in the past years, which had the Brazilians raving. This year, with our new partners AIG, we will be taking a handful of the most talented kids to Manchester, England, for a week of world-class soccer coaching hosted by Manchester United."
Mazibuko and Whiting coordinate the soccer coaching and life skills development clinics together with Safa-accredited coaches, as well as veteran football personalities.
One of these lucky hopefuls, Tyroane Sandows, 12, has been offered a three-year contract by the Sao Paulo Football Club.
Five other recruits who are currently enrolled at the Safa and Transnet Sports School of Excellence are 14-year-old Bongani Mocksin and Kwanele Nkosi, Tumisho Morerwa, Jerry Nkwane and Godfrey Molemela, all 16 years old.
