The popular television and radio series Heartlines has now been introduced to the high school curriculum.
Heartlines is a mass media project aimed at promoting values in South Africa. It was first introduced on South African television and radio in 2005.
About 40000 free books were distributed to schools to be taught as part of the life orientation curriculum.
Life orientation is a compulsory subject for grades 8 to 12.
The Heartlines booklets are designed for grade 10 and 11 pupils and consist of four modules for each grade.
Each module focuses on one of the eight Heartlines movies that have been edited down to 17 minutes and put on DVD, which comes with the book.
Themes discussed in the films include perseverance, compassion, grace, love, acceptance and responsibility.
Jennifer Charlton, Heartlines project manager for schools, says they are now producing one-minute films and next year's series will also be turned into booklets.
