After a successful run here and abroad the theatre production Uhambo returns for a new journey.
Directed by Smal Ndaba and Phyllis Klotz, Uhambo: The Journey premiered in 1997 and toured all provinces in the country before heading for the US and Germany.
The show opens on April 16 and runs until April 27 at the Sibikwa Arts Centre, Benoni.
Klotz says the show tells the bitter-sweet story of a young boy, Mzano, growing up in South Africa during the 1950s.
"We brought the show back because we felt it was time we introduced a younger generation to what happened in the 1950s," Klotz says. "They won't get bored since this will be done in an entertaining way."
Uhambo is told with music, dance and dialogue, atmosphe- rically capturing the essence of the 1950s. It portrays the harsh system of migratory labour and the evergrowing repression of apartheid.
"It is the music, dance, dialogue and strong performances that ultimately drive home an epic tale about one boy's adventure during a vibrant yet conflicting time in South Africa," Klotz says.
He says the story begins on the day of Nelson Mandela's inauguration as president of SA.
"On the other side of South Africa, in a remote area, Mzano sits listening to the proceedings on his radio.
While Mandela speaks Mzano reminisces about his life. The audience is taken back to the 1950s, when he was 14, and embarked on a journey to find his parents - ultimately his journey to manhood."
