Fears of a serial killer on the loose have resurfaced after the discovery of the body of a five-year-old girl who went missing at the weekend.

Maria Mafora, who lived with her grandmother, disappeared on Saturday after playing with friends at Phahameng location in Modimolle, Limpopo.

She was reported missing the same day and police started a large-scale search involving a helicopter and sniffer dogs.

The search continued throughout Saturday night and Sunday.

Her body was only discovered on Monday in a shallow grave.

Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo said Mafora was found half naked. Police fear she is the eighth victim of a serial killer who had been terrorising the community for the past four years.

A man arrested in January was released after DNA collected from the murder victims did not match the suspect.

Police and residents, however, believe "the right suspect" was arrested.
