'Christians must be moral custodians'

Kwazulu-Natal Premier S'bu Ndebele yesterday appealed to Christians to "engage" with and not to "disengage" from the world.

Christians, he said, had a "duty and obligation" to be custodians of a collectively-held moral code in our society.

He also used the opportunity to appeal to all faith-based communities to help the government achieve a society based on the values of family, interracial harmony and good citizenship.

Ndebele was addressing delegates at the 15th International Apostolic School of Ministry gathering in Pietermaritzburg.

"This implies that Christians have a duty to actively influence institutions and organisations towards the attainment of ideal conditions in which men and women can achieve their full potential. It is our view that Christians have a duty to change the world. Such change must be for a better world in which individuals and communities are safe from hunger, poverty, crime and corruption," Ndebele said.

He said there was no doubt that since 1994 South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal were better places to live in for all races and classes.

"But we are facing some of our biggest questions, such as HIV and Aids, crime, an increase in teenage pregnancies in our schools and our children taking drugs and turning more and more violent at schools," he said.
