So in celebration of the 20th yearly Massed Choir Competition the South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) Endowment for the National Arts - with the organisers of the Transnet Foundation, SABC and Sowetan Massed Choir Festival - is calling on all up-and-coming South African choral composers to enter their work for a commemorative choral composition competition.
Twenty choirs, making up a formidable 1000-voice chorus, are due to perform the winning composition in Johannesburg in November.
Festival leaders Ludumo Maga- ngane, Thabiso Mosabala, Danny Pooe, Thulasizwe Nkabinde and Mokale Koapeng are also due to conduct several soloists, a Nation-Building Orchestra and a guest artist.
Guidelines for the compositions:
lThe lyrics of the composition may be in any of the 11 official languages;
lThe composition should be a capella (unaccompanied), written in either tonic solfa or staff notation;
lThe duration of the composition should not be less than four minutes and not more than six minutes;
lThe lifespan of the song should be beyond the 20th Massed Choir Festival; and
lThe composer should submit a score and, where possible, a recording of the composition.
The songs should be submitted to Samro Endowment for the National Arts, by hand, at Samro House, 73 Juta Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, or by mail at Samro-Nation-Building Choral Competition, PO Box 31609, Braamfontein, 2017, by not later than May 31.
Samro Endowment for the National Arts will give a token award of R3000 to the over-all winner. Two runners-up will receive R2000 and R1000. The winning works will be placed in the Samro Archive of SA Music for distribution after the competition. - Victor Mecoamere
