Sowetan's Nation-Building campaign assumes a fun-filled, family oriented hue with a new project in Mapetla, Soweto, next month.

Known as the Sowetan Big Walk: powered by Coca-Cola South Africa in association with the Loop en Val Athletic Club - the project introduces and encouraging walking as a family and community health and fitness tool.

It also contributes to the promotion of walking as a growing competitive sport in athletics.

Its other key partners include Jozi FM and Joburg Water.

Conceived by Madimo Promotions and forming part of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation's community development activities, the Sowetan Big Walk is also being held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Sowetan's Nation-Building concept, philosophy and work.

Also honouring the memory of legendary runner Matthews "Loop en Val" Motshwarateu, the Sowetan Big Walk is proudly and officially located on the Central Gauteng Athletics' yearly race calendar. The hosting club is named in his honour.

Starting near, and finishing inside, the Mapetla Sports Centre on May 1, the Sowetan Big Walk is due to cater for children and participants interested in taking part in the 5km fun walk as well as walkers who are up to the 10km challenge.

The entry fee for the 5km fun walk is R10. For the 10km challenge, the entry fee is R20.

Walkers who are not affiliated to any athletic club should expect to pay an additional R15 for a temporary licence.

Pensioners enter at no cost.

Registration is due to take place on race day, May 1, from 7am.

Preregistration forms can be obtained from Sowetan's Johannesburg offices at 61 Commando Road, Industrial West, on weekdays from Friday April 11 between 10am and 4pm.

More than R10000 in prize money is up for grabs.
