Residents of KwaSawoti in southern KwaZulu-Natal commended the justice system after a 52-year-old man for raping his stepdaughter.
The man was sentenced to 22 years in prison by the Durban high court on Friday for raping his nine-year-old stepdaughter in June 2006.
The court heard that the girl was reluctant to report the incident to her mother because she was afraid of being punished.
The man was exposed a month later when the girl developed vaginal sores and was taken to the clinic where she told the nursing sister about the incident.
"This man was evil," said one of the neighbours who did not want to be named.
"He is not even fit to be called a man because real men do not rape women, let alone young girls.
"This evil man should die in prison but that is not enough. He must also face the Almighty for his sins.
"We want to see similar judgments in other areas where men are accused of rape."
The man had forced himself on the child and raped her in the kitchen while her mother had gone to visit relatives.
Police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum said the victim's elder sister had gone to the toilet when the man pounced on his stepdaughter.
He forced the girl to remove her underwear and raped her on the kitchen floor.
"The case was first heard in the Scottburgh regional court last year and the man was found guilty of raping the girl.
The case was then transferred to Durban for judgment."
